just realized
that this is the first year i’m going to have a valentine.
:]
It’s been a long time since I’ve been on tumblr. For whatever reason, I decided to revisit it the other day. Possibly that was the wrong decision to make in the midst of second semester beginning and rehearsals for Romeo and Juliet culminating into our most hectic weeks, but what can I say. I flirt with danger.
Anyway rereading my posts is like becoming reacquainted with myself. More than that, remembering who I was two years ago and seeing how much and how little I have changed since then. It’s sort of remarkable and sort of calming to be able to touch some small part of myself from that time. That sophomoric stage of my journey to becoming a human being instead of a teenager.
There is a lot more for me to say. But to whatever followers that I have that see this or don’t see this. To me in two more years. To any creepy stalkers that I sincerely hope I don’t develop later in life I will mark my return to tumblr with these words. These words that are so incongruent with the Claire of 2010 who began this strange document of life.
I’m in love.

For some reason. This photo strikes me in an incredibly powerful way.

Today in Euro. Something jumped out at me. The topic we are currently focusing on is Napoleon and his empire, and today at the beginning of our usual class discussion we were talking about the way he was able to govern France.
Now for all of y’all who are unsure about Napoleon and his history here’s an EXTREMELY brief life summary:
He staged a coup d’etat in 1799 that some historians believe was an end to the French Revolution that had begun around 1789 (though beginnings and endings are both shady concepts). In the next 15 years he then went on to become First Consul, Consul for Life, and eventually Emperor of France. He expanded the empire continually until he controlled a large majority of Europe to some extent or another. He reformed many aspects of the poor French gov’t with his Bank of France, Concordat of 1801, Napoleonic Code, National Education system, and many other changes that still affect France to this day. He also strove to bring the Enlightenment/Revolutionary ideas to the people. Unfortunately, his authoritarian craving for power and his constant wars became too much and he was exiled to Elba in 1814. Being Napoleon, he escaped and had a Hundred Days of ruling France before he was defeated in the battle of Waterloo (yes that’s where the idea for the ABBA song came from), and finally exiled to St. Helena.
Basically, Napoleon is fascinating. My teacher was talking about him and he said that Napoleon couldn’t help but govern France the way he did. I just think that testifies so much to how amazing he was. That he is one of those people that has his own era, & more importantly his own chapter in my textbook. He created France in his image. So powerful. Its such a fantastic concept.

Oh, I can’t take another heartache
Though you say you’re my friend
I’m at my wits end
You say your love is bonafide
But that don’t coincide
With the things that you’re doing
When I ask you to be nice
You say you gotta be
Cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you
Baby, you gotta be cruel to be kind
Well, I do my best to understand dear
But you still mystify, and I wanna know why
I pick myself up off the ground
And have you knock me back down
Again and again
And when I ask you to explain
You say you gotta be
Cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you
Baby, you gotta be cruel to be kind
Well, I do my best to understand dear
But you still mystify, and I wanna know why
I pick myself up off the ground
And have you knock me back down
Again and again
And when I ask you to explain
You say you gotta be
Cruel to be kind, in the right measure
Cruel to be kind, it’s a very good sign
Cruel to be kind, means that I love you
Baby, you gotta be cruel to be kind
